YuMove for Dogs: What the Evidence Actually Shows

YuMove is a green-lipped mussel and glucosamine joint supplement, originally from the UK company Lintbells and now sold in the US by Vetnique Labs, whose headline claim is a “clinically proven” mobility result in a matter of weeks. The claim rests on a single canine study credited on-pack only to “a leading UK Veterinary College,” with no journal, volume or year attached. Its ingredient panel is unusually transparent for the category, its green-lipped mussel research is more encouraging than its glucosamine research, and the independent evidence base for oral joint nutraceuticals remains weak enough that nothing in this aisle deserves to be treated as a sure thing.

The short version. YuMove discloses exactly how much of each active is in a chew, which most competitors do not. Green-lipped mussel has some blinded placebo-controlled support in dogs; glucosamine, the highest-dose ingredient in the retail chew, has been repeatedly found ineffective in independent meta-analysis. The “clinically proven” line traces to one study, cited without a journal reference — and the brand’s own site currently states the timeframe two different ways, as four weeks on the product page and six weeks further down the same collection page.

Who actually makes YuMove?

YuMove was developed by Lintbells, a British supplement company co-founded by John Howie. In the US the brand now sits inside Vetnique Labs: the old us.yumove.com storefront redirects to vetnique.com, where the YuMOVE collection page describes the range as “NASC-certified, vet-recommended, and made in the USA” and the product page describes it as “backed by 15 years of research.” A separate vet-channel line, YuMove Advance 360, is distributed through veterinary and pharmacy channels rather than the Vetnique consumer store, whose current vet-tier product is branded Advanced Vet Strength. The consumer range listed on vetnique.com covers soft chews for small, standard and extra-large dogs, Advanced Vet Strength chews and tablets, adult and senior tablets, and capsules for cats.

What is actually in YuMove?

This is where YuMove earns real credit. Both the consumer and vet-exclusive chews publish a full active-ingredient panel with amounts, which is not the norm in a category built on proprietary blends.

Two things jump out. The gap between the products is large — the vet-channel chew carries almost three times the green-lipped mussel per chew and roughly sixty times the omega-3. And in the retail Hip & Joint Health chew, the ingredient present in the largest amount is glucosamine, while the omega-3 figure is very small. Since green-lipped mussel is marketed partly as an omega-3 source, that is worth noticing before paying a premium for the mussel story. Both labels describe a front-loading schedule: a larger daily amount at the start, then a lower ongoing amount, scaled to the dog’s weight band. Those are label statements, not a recommendation from this article — follow the tub you actually bought, or your veterinarian’s direction.

What does the research say about each claim?

Separating what a study actually measured from what a label implies is the most useful filter in this category.

Green-lipped mussel: the most defensible ingredient

Perna canaliculus, the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, is the ingredient YuMove builds its identity around, and it has the most credible dog data. In a prospective, block-randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of 75 pet dogs with hip osteoarthritis published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2023, Kampa and colleagues found that two marine-based fatty acid compounds significantly increased peak vertical force at four and six weeks — more than placebo, and to a similar degree as carprofen. Glucosamine and chondroitin, tested in the same trial, did not.

One honest caveat, and it is a big one: the trial tested two named commercial marine lipid compounds, PCSO-524 and EAB-277, not YuMove. It supports the ingredient class, not the brand — and it is a single trial of 75 dogs, not a body of replicated work.

Glucosamine: the highest-dose ingredient with the weakest case

The 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis by Barbeau-Grégoire and colleagues in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences screened close to 1,600 publications and analysed 72 trials. Its conclusion was blunt: “a very marked non-effect of chondroitin-glucosamine nutraceuticals, which leads us to recommend that the latter products should no longer be recommended for pain management in canine and feline osteoarthritis.”

The Merck Veterinary Manual reaches the same place, noting that a systematic review “found no evidence of a beneficial effect and concluded that the available evidence did not support the use of these supplements for pain management in OA in dogs and cats.” This is not a YuMove problem specifically — it applies across the aisle, including to Cosequin’s chondroitin-glucosamine formula and most of the wider field of dog arthritis supplements.

The 2022 AAHA Pain Management Guidelines summarise the field in one sentence: “The most comprehensive review on the efficacy of nutraceuticals to alleviate the clinical signs of OA concluded that the strength of evidence was low for all nutraceuticals except for omega-3 fatty acid in dogs.” Fourteen years after that review — Vandeweerd and colleagues, 2012, in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine — omega-3 is still the only oral supplement ingredient clearing the bar comfortably.

What does “clinically proven to work” actually mean here?

The asterisk on the US product page leads to this footnote, quoted verbatim: “In vivo, double-blind, placebo-controlled, objectively measured canine clinical study by a leading UK Veterinary College (Excluding YuMOVE Joint Care for Young Dogs).”

Two things are worth pulling out of that sentence. The college is not named. And the claim explicitly does not cover every product carrying the YuMove name.

Veterinary trade reporting fills in the gap the footnote leaves. Coverage of the research described a two-and-a-half-year Royal Veterinary College project led by Dr Matthew Pead in which activity monitors originally developed to track wild cats measured dogs over six weeks, with the YuMove group showing statistically significant improvement over placebo. The same reporting states that the study was sponsored by Lintbells, the UK-based manufacturer of YuMove.

None of that makes the study worthless. Sponsored trials are how most veterinary nutraceutical evidence gets generated, and a double-blind placebo-controlled design with objective accelerometry beats the owner questionnaires many competitors rely on. What matters is the gap between a manufacturer-sponsored study cited on-pack without a journal, volume or year, and an independently replicated result a reader can look up.

What do YuMove’s marketing claims rest on?

The four-versus-six-week discrepancy is the tell. When the same asterisk supports two different timeframes on one website, the number is being set by copywriting, not by the study.

How does YuMove compare on transparency?

Judged purely on ingredient disclosure, YuMove sits near the top of the category. It publishes per-chew amounts for every active, names its mussel source region, attaches a footnote to each marketing claim, and states what the efficacy claim does not cover. Most joint chews sold online disclose none of that. The footnotes are still thin — an unnamed college and an undated in-house customer survey are not citations you can check — but they exist, which is more than most competitors manage. Where it is beatable: the retail chew delivers very little omega-3 by weight, and omega-3 is the ingredient with the best evidence in dogs. An owner chasing that signal may be better served discussing a dedicated marine oil or an omega-3-enriched therapeutic diet with a veterinarian.

What can you realistically expect?

Set expectations against what the trials measured, not what a chew is marketed to do.

  • Weeks 0-2. In the Kampa trial, only carprofen changed significantly at week two. Nothing measurable from a supplement this early would be surprising.
  • Weeks 4-6. Where the marine lipid groups separated from placebo in the Kampa trial, and the range the brand’s own claims and feeding guide sit inside. Vetnique’s satisfaction guarantee runs on a longer, three-month window, so a four-week claim and the refund period are not the same clock.
  • What “improvement” meant. A change in peak vertical force — how hard the limb pushes into a plate. Subjective orthopedic assessment scores did not change significantly in any group, including carprofen.
  • What no supplement did. None of these trials show cartilage regrowth, reversal of arthritis, or replacement of a veterinary pain plan.

What do owners most often get wrong?

  • Treating a supplement as a substitute for a diagnosis. Cruciate injury, immune-mediated arthritis and bone tumours do not respond to a joint chew.
  • Comparing products on price per chew. Compare instead on milligrams of the ingredient you care about, per day, for your dog’s weight band.
  • Stopping at week three. In the trials that did detect a difference, it emerged at around four to six weeks, not earlier.
  • Assuming “natural” means no interactions. Marine-derived products matter for dogs with shellfish sensitivities or bleeding concerns.
  • Reading a vet-recommendation statistic as an efficacy statistic. Those surveys measure familiarity and distribution.

When to call your veterinarian

Speak to a veterinarian before starting or continuing any joint supplement if your dog:

  • has become suddenly, severely or non-weight-bearing lame, or is lame in one leg only
  • is showing pain that worsens week to week rather than staying stable
  • has known kidney, liver or bleeding disorders, or takes any prescription medication, including NSAIDs
  • is pregnant, lactating or intended for breeding — the YuMove Advance 360 label states that safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been proven
  • has a shellfish or fish sensitivity, or is a fast-growing large-breed puppy whose orthopaedic development needs assessment first
  • shows no change after the four-to-six-week window the brand’s own claims and feeding guide use

The brand takes the same line for any complicating condition. Vetnique’s product FAQ states that if your dog has underlying health issues, “we always recommend checking with your veterinarian.” The Advance 360 label goes further and instructs owners to stop the product and consult a veterinarian if the animal’s condition worsens or does not improve. Take that seriously.

The brand states the timeframe inconsistently: its US product page claims results in four weeks, while the same collection page claims six weeks lower down, both pointing to the same single study. The feeding guide sets a larger daily amount for the first four to six weeks before dropping to an ongoing amount. In independent trials of marine lipid supplements in dogs, differences from placebo appeared at four to six weeks rather than earlier. Follow your product label or your veterinarian’s direction.

Is YuMove better than Cosequin or other glucosamine chews?
On label transparency YuMove compares well, because it publishes per-chew amounts and footnotes its marketing claims. On evidence, no head-to-head trial of YuMove against Cosequin exists, and glucosamine, the ingredient both rely on most heavily, is the one independent meta-analysis has found least convincing. The most meaningful difference is green-lipped mussel content, which is higher in the vet-exclusive product than the retail chew.

Are there side effects or reasons not to give YuMove?
The YuMove Advance 360 label states that safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been proven. Vetnique’s product FAQ advises owners of dogs with underlying health issues to check with their veterinarian first. Because the formula is marine-derived, dogs with fish or shellfish sensitivities need veterinary input. The Advance 360 label also directs owners to stop the product and consult a veterinarian if the animal’s condition worsens or does not improve.

Is YuMove worth the money?
That depends what you are buying it for. As a well-disclosed, NASC-certified supplement sold with a three-month satisfaction guarantee, it is a reasonable option to trial alongside weight management, controlled exercise and veterinary care. As a substitute for those, or on the expectation of a drug-sized effect, it is not. Evidence for oral joint nutraceuticals in dogs remains limited across the whole category.
