Connectin for Dogs: What the Label Says and What the Evidence Supports

Connectin is a hip and joint supplement for dogs made by inClover Research, a Boulder, Colorado company, built around glucosamine HCl, a porcine-sourced chondroitin and hyaluronic acid blend, and nine herbs. It is sold as a powder, soft chews, crunchy tablets, and a concentrated large-dog chew. inClover markets it as “the only joint supplement clinically proven by independent researchers to help support comfort and mobility in an average of 15 days” — a claim that traces back to a real trial, but one whose published write-up does not appear in PubMed and does not report a 15-day endpoint.

The short answer: Connectin is a fully disclosed, NASC-participating joint supplement whose per-serving amounts are printed openly — which is more than many competitors offer. But its chondroitin and hyaluronic acid are listed only as a combined “mucopolysaccharides” figure, its herbal extracts carry no standardisation data, and the “clinically proven in 15 days” line rests on a 2014 trade-publication write-up rather than a peer-reviewed, indexed paper. Treat it as a reasonable, transparent option — not as a proven treatment.

Who makes Connectin, and what is it for?

inClover Research has sold pet supplements since 1996 from Boulder, Colorado. Its Safety & Quality page states that its quality systems include cGMP, AAFCO, FDA, HACCP and NASC independent audits, and it displays the NASC Quality Seal. That matters: the seal signifies a company has been audited against specific standards, which is meaningful in a category with almost no pre-market regulation.

Connectin is positioned for dogs with age-related stiffness and for younger dogs whose owners want joint support early. It is a nutritional supplement, not a medication, and not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or for the drugs vets use to manage arthritis pain.

What is actually in Connectin?

This is where Connectin earns real credit. The official Canine Connectin product page publishes complete active-ingredient panels for all four formats, with per-serving milligrams for every active — a level of disclosure a surprising number of brands skip.

One point most reviews miss: the formats are not interchangeable. On inClover’s own weight chart, a 50 lb dog on maintenance takes 3/4 of a powder scoop or one soft chew — roughly 900 mg of mucopolysaccharides from the powder against 250 mg from the chew, about 3.6 times as much of the chondroitin-and-HA fraction at the same body weight. Glucosamine is closer (about 469 mg versus 500 mg). Switching format for palatability is not switching like for like, and the herbs can’t be compared at all: the powder uses whole roots, the chews use extracts.

That pooled mucopolysaccharide figure is the biggest gap, because chondroitin and hyaluronic acid are exactly what buyers want to compare across brands. Pricing is a separate moving target: inClover’s own comparison chart and its online store disagreed with each other in August 2026, so check the price at the point of sale.

Is Connectin really “clinically proven in 15 days”?

A real trial does exist. A write-up titled “Randomized Double-blinded, Placebo-controlled Multi-center Trial of an Orally Administered Composition (Connectin®) for the Treatment of Canine Osteoarthritis” was published by IVC Journal on 1 April 2014. It describes a five-site, GLP-following trial in which 46 dogs completed the study — 22 on Connectin and 24 on placebo — over eight consecutive weeks, with lameness examinations and Footscan pressure-plate gait analysis at day 28 and day 56. The stated conclusion was statistically significant improvement in orthopedic evaluation parameters versus placebo, specifically for lameness, willingness to hold the contralateral limb, and weight bearing of the affected joint, with no significant changes in kidney function, liver function, hematology, or physical parameters.

Here is what could not be verified as of August 2026:

  • No PubMed-indexed publication. A PubMed search for “Connectin” combined with dog or canine returns only records about connectin (titin), the elastic muscle protein — none about the supplement. No indexed, peer-reviewed publication of this trial was locatable.
  • IVC Journal is a trade magazine, not an indexed peer-reviewed veterinary journal. The write-up carries a site-account byline rather than named study authors, and no DOI. It credits a Colorado State University statistician in its acknowledgements.
  • The write-up does not report a 15-day result. Owners completed weekly assessment forms from day 7, but the only reported outcomes come from the veterinary examinations and pressure-plate readings taken on day 28 and day 56. The phrase “15 days” does not appear in the text.
  • The institution attribution is inconsistent. inClover’s “Our Science” page states the company worked with “Massey University Veterinary school” on “force plate clinical studies.” The IVC write-up describes a five-site multi-centre trial using a Footscan pressure plate and does not mention Massey University.
  • The write-up’s own conclusion notes that owner assessment did not differ significantly between the Connectin and placebo groups. The significant findings were on veterinarian-scored orthopedic parameters. That is a meaningful distinction, because what an owner notices at home is usually what they are paying for.

None of this means Connectin doesn’t help dogs. It means the phrase “clinically proven” is doing more work than the publicly available evidence can carry. inClover itself footnotes the claim with “Verified by independent veterinary researchers. Clinical data on file” — an acknowledgement that the supporting dataset is not public.

What does independent research say about Connectin’s ingredients?

The headline ingredients have the weakest evidence, and the herb with the best canine data is not in the formula.

Supplement timelines are the most oversold part of this category. Set expectations against what the research and the label describe:

Common mistakes owners make with Connectin

Switching formats and assuming the dose carried over. A maintenance scoop of powder and a maintenance soft chew are not equivalent on mucopolysaccharides. Re-read the weight chart when you change format.

Reading “clinically proven” as “will work for my dog.” Even in the trial inClover cites, the group-level benefit appeared on vet-scored measures while owner assessment did not separate from placebo.

Skipping the shellfish check. The glucosamine is shellfish-derived — mention that to your vet if your dog has reacted to shellfish-based products.

Treating a supplement as the whole plan. Weight, controlled exercise, traction on slippery floors and, where appropriate, prescription analgesia carry far more evidence — and there are practical ways to help a dog with arthritis at home that cost nothing.

Book an appointment rather than reaching for a supplement if your dog shows:

  • A joint that is hot, visibly swollen, or painful to light touch
  • Lameness with fever, lethargy, or loss of appetite
  • Rapid deterioration in mobility over days rather than months
  • Yelping when picked up, or new reluctance to be handled
  • Any neurological sign — knuckling, dragging a paw, wobbling, or loss of bladder control
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, or appetite loss after starting any new supplement

Also call before starting Connectin if your dog is pregnant or nursing, has a history of gastrointestinal ulceration, liver or kidney disease, or a bleeding disorder, or takes NSAIDs, anticoagulants or cardiac medication. Ask about the whole plan, not just the supplement — weight and analgesia are where the strongest evidence lives.
