Peptides vs UC-II vs collagen sticks
Hydrolysed collagen peptides (types I and III). Enzymatically cleaved into di- and tripeptides of roughly 2–5 kDa. That matters: intact collagen is far too large to cross the intestinal wall, whereas small peptides such as prolyl-hydroxyproline are absorbed intact and have been detected in plasma after oral dosing. Sources are bovine hide, porcine skin or marine (fish skin and scales). Marine peptides are typically lower molecular weight and slightly better absorbed.
Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II). A completely different mechanism — not a building block but an immune-signalling one, working through oral tolerance in gut-associated lymphoid tissue. Placebo-controlled canine work on UC-II has reported improvements in objective lameness and force-plate measures in dogs with osteoarthritis (Deparle et al., J Vet Pharmacol Ther, 2005; D’Altilio et al., 2007; Gupta et al., 2009). Human trials of hydrolysed peptides show measurable changes in skin hydration and elasticity, and plasma appearance of collagen-derived peptides is well documented.
Extrapolated, not proven in dogs. Coat gloss, nail and paw-pad quality, gut-lining support. Biologically plausible given glycine and proline demand, but canine trial data is thin. Say “may support”, and be suspicious of any UK brand claiming otherwise.
Not supportable. Anything phrased as treating, curing or reversing arthritis, hip dysplasia or skin disease. Under UK feed law a complementary feedingstuff cannot make a medicinal claim, and a brand that does is telling you something about its compliance, not its formula.
