Most healthy dogs eating a complete and balanced commercial diet do not need supplements. The categories with the most published canine research are omega-3 fatty acids for joint comfort and dental products carrying the Veterinary Oral Health Council seal; probiotics, glucosamine blends, and eye antioxidants sit on thinner ground. The useful question is not “which supplement is best” but “is a supplement the right tool for this specific problem in this specific dog.”
Answer box: the short version
- The American College of Veterinary Nutrition states that if a pet eats a complete and balanced commercial food, supplements are not recommended unless a veterinarian specifically prescribes one (AVMA, 2017).
- Evidence quality varies enormously by category. Omega-3 fatty acids have a large randomized canine trial behind them. Probiotics for acute digestive upset have a systematic review that found a “very limited and possibly clinically unimportant” effect.
- Supplements for animals are not reviewed by the FDA for effectiveness before sale, and quality control has been a documented weak point.
- A supplement is the wrong tool when the underlying problem is weight, pain that needs a drug, dental disease that needs a cleaning, or an undiagnosed condition.
Do healthy dogs need supplements at all?
Roughly a third of US households with dogs give some form of supplement, according to market research cited by the AVMA. That popularity has run well ahead of the evidence. The Merck Veterinary Manual puts it bluntly in its overview of nutraceuticals: commercial success “has, for the most part, not been accompanied by scientific evidence of efficacy,” and the manual adds that supplements are not required and may in some cases be harmful.
The harm side is not hypothetical. Lisa Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Nutrition), of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, has written that complete and balanced pet foods are formulated to deliver the right amount of each nutrient, and that adding vitamin or mineral supplements on top of a balanced diet can put a dog at risk for toxicity. A supplement proven safe in humans may also behave differently in a dog.
There is a regulatory gap behind all of this. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 covers human supplements; the FDA has taken the position that it does not apply to animals. Animal supplements therefore sit in what the AVMA described as a regulatory gray area, with the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) running a voluntary labeling and audit program in that space.
Which supplement categories have the strongest evidence?
The table below sorts the main categories by the strength of published canine research, not by how heavily they are marketed.

Two things stand out. The strongest joint signal in the table is not the ingredient most people associate with joints. And “moderate evidence” still means owner-reported outcomes, not force-plate data — in the omega-3 trial the objective veterinary assessments showed no difference between groups, which is a real limitation of the evidence rather than a footnote to it.

How do you decide whether a supplement is even the right tool?
Work through these in order. If you stop at any step, you have your answer.
- Is there a diagnosis? A supplement chosen for a guessed cause is a coin flip. Persistent itching, chronic loose stool, and a new limp all have differential diagnoses that a physical exam narrows quickly.
- Is the diet already complete and balanced? If yes, a general multivitamin adds risk without adding benefit. If the dog eats a home-prepared diet not designed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, or a food labelled “for intermittent or supplemental use,” the gap is a formulation problem, not a supplement problem.
- Is there a higher-yield intervention available? Freeman has noted that for an overweight dog with arthritis, the effect of weight loss is much larger than the effect of glucosamine. Dental disease responds to a cleaning under anaesthesia in a way no chew matches.
- Does an approved drug exist for this? For osteoarthritis pain, the systematic-review evidence is strongest for prescription NSAIDs, not nutraceuticals. A supplement may sit alongside that plan, not replace it.
- Can you name the outcome you are watching? “Rises from her bed without hesitating” is measurable. “Better overall” is not.

Published trials give a rough sense of the timescales researchers used. These are study observation windows, not dosing instructions — follow your product label or your veterinarian.

What mistakes do dog owners make most often?
- Stacking overlapping products. Freeman has described seeing patients on multiple supplements that overlap or interact. Two joint chews and a fish oil can deliver a cumulative dose nobody planned.

- Starting several things at once. If three products begin on the same day, no outcome can be attributed to any of them.
When should you call your vet?
Contact your veterinarian promptly — before adding or continuing any supplement — if your dog shows:
- A new or worsening limp, reluctance to rise, or yelping when touched
- Diarrhoea lasting more than a day or two, blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, or lethargy alongside digestive signs
- Itching severe enough to break skin, or hair loss, odour, or crusting
- Any change in the eye: cloudiness, redness, squinting, rubbing, or a change in discharge
- Bad breath with reluctance to chew, bleeding gums, or a broken tooth
- Any reaction after starting a supplement, including appetite loss or gastrointestinal upset
Also call before starting a supplement if your dog is pregnant, on prescription medication, has kidney, liver or heart disease, or is scheduled for surgery. Is glucosamine worth giving to a dog with arthritis?
Research suggests any benefit is modest at best. A JAVMA systematic review found the single qualifying trial of a glucosamine and chondroitin combination reported no significant improvement, and JAVMA News reported that the AVMA rescinded its glucosamine policy for lack of efficacy data.
