What collagen bones are actually made of
Cattle hide is split into layers during processing. The middle layer — the corium — is dense connective tissue, largely type I collagen. That corium is what gets cut, rolled or braided and dried into the chews sold as collagen bones and sticks.
The guaranteed analysis on real products tells you what you are handing over. Bow Wow Labs’ plain beef collagen sticks list crude protein at a minimum of 84%, crude fat at just 0.21%, and moisture at 17% or less. That is an unusually lean chew. But flavoured and meat-coated versions are a different animal entirely: a 6-inch collagen stick with beef runs 38.6% protein and 15.2% crude fat. If your dog is fat-sensitive, those two products are not interchangeable, and the packaging will not make that obvious.
Collagen chews vs rawhide vs bully sticks
The standard sales pitch is that collagen chews are the digestible, unprocessed cousin of rawhide. Worth being precise here: rawhide comes from the same cattle hide, conventionally the outer or inner layers, and is typically limed and bleached; collagen chews are marketed as the corium layer, dried rather than chemically treated.
That processing difference is real. The digestibility claim built on top of it, however, is not backed by any peer-reviewed or regulatory source we could find — every assertion of it traces back to brands and retailers. It may well be true. It has not been demonstrated. Buy on the merits you can verify: composition, hardness, size and calories.
The calorie problem nobody mentions
Chews are food, and they are rarely counted as such. Bow Wow Labs’ published figures: a 6-inch thick stick is 89 kcal; a 12-inch jumbo is 168 kcal.
To see why that matters, borrow the benchmark from Tufts. Researchers at the Cummings School measured bully sticks at an average of 15 kcal per inch, and pointed out that a single 6-inch stick supplies about 9% of a 50-pound dog’s daily calories — and roughly 30% for a 10-pound dog (Freeman, Janecko & Weese, Canadian Veterinary Journal 2013). Collagen sticks sit in the same band. A daily chew for a small dog is not a treat; it is a third of dinner.
If your dog is on a weight plan or already gets collagen chews and collagen sticks on rotation, subtract those calories from the bowl.
Safety: teeth, obstruction and hygiene
Tooth fractures
Hard chews break teeth, and the tooth that breaks is usually the upper fourth premolar — the big carnassial. A cadaveric study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science (2018) loaded 24 canine maxillary fourth premolars and found a mean fracture force of 1,281 N. Simulated molar bite forces can exceed 3,400 N. The same literature puts tooth-fracture prevalence in dogs at 20–27%, and these are often complicated crown fractures that expose the pulp.
The practical screen comes from Cornell’s Dr. Brian Collins, who discourages bones, antlers and hooves outright and offers a test any owner can run: a suitable chew should be bendable and able to be indented with a fingernail. Press your thumbnail into the collagen bone before you hand it over. If it does not mark, it is hard enough to fracture a carnassial. Note also that about half of owners never notice a broken tooth — there is often no yelp.
Choking and obstruction
The failure mode is predictable: the dog chews the stick down to a short stub, then swallows the stub whole. That stub is the choking and gastrointestinal-obstruction risk. It is why supervision is not optional and why the last inch or two should always be taken away, no matter how much your dog objects.
Bacterial contamination
Dried animal chews are raw animal products. The Tufts group cultured 26 bully sticks and found E. coli on 27%, MRSA on 4% and Clostridium difficile on 4%. And the FDA’s 2019 pig-ear investigation traced 143 human Salmonella cases and 26 hospitalisations to pet chews, triggering multiple recalls and an import alert. The FDA’s guidance transfers directly to collagen bones: supervise, pick the chew up when your dog is done, keep it away from small children, wash your hands, and disinfect the surface it touched. Immunocompromised, pregnant, very young and elderly people should not handle them.

Do collagen chews help joints? What the research actually says
This is where the category oversells itself, so it is worth separating three things that get blurred together.
1. Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) — genuinely studied in dogs
There is real canine trial evidence, and it is specific:
- DeParle, Gupta et al., 2005, Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics 28(4):385–390 (PMID 16050819) — randomised trial, 1 mg or 10 mg UC-II daily for 90 days.
- Gupta et al., 2012, Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition 96(5):770–777 (PMID 21623931) — arthritic dogs, force-plate assessment, 10 mg UC-II daily for 150 days, compared against glucosamine plus chondroitin.
- Varney et al., 2022, Translational Animal Science 6(3):txac123 — healthy Labradors given a 40 mg UC-II product delivering 10 mg total collagen, placebo-controlled.
- Stabile et al., 2024, PLOS ONE 19(10) — randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover; 40 mg UC-II plus Boswellia per 3 g chew, with owner-assessed mobility improving by week four.
Notice the common thread: milligram-level, standardised, denaturation-controlled doses. UC-II’s proposed mechanism is oral tolerance, which depends on the collagen’s native triple-helix structure surviving intact to the gut. That is the entire point of the word undenatured.
2. Hydrolysed collagen peptides — thinner evidence in dogs
Hydrolysed peptides are the form in most liquid and powder collagen supplements. The human literature on skin and joint outcomes is substantial; comparable canine randomised trials are not. Stated plainly: current research does not strongly prove joint benefit from hydrolysed collagen peptides in dogs. It is a reasonable, well-tolerated source of glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, and it is honest to describe it as supportive rather than proven.
3. The chew — not a dose at all
A collagen bone is dried hide protein. Drying and processing denature the collagen, which removes the structural property UC-II research depends on. And the quantity is unknown: labels declare crude protein percentage, never milligrams of bioactive collagen. You cannot dose what nobody measured.
So: a collagen bone is a decent protein-rich chew that keeps a dog occupied and works some plaque off the teeth through mechanical action. It is not a joint supplement, and no chew on the market has been shown to reproduce what the UC-II trials found.
