VetIQ Hip and Joint: An Honest Look at What’s Inside and What It Can Do

VetIQ Hip & Joint is a low-cost, chicken-flavored soft chew sold mainly through Walmart, Chewy and Sam’s Club. PetIQ’s own product page describes it as built on “glucosamine, omegas, and MSM,” and — importantly — publishes no per-serving amounts for any of them. Whether the product helps your dog depends far less on the brand than on which of those ingredient classes actually have evidence behind them in dogs, and on that question the honest answer is that the omega-3 fraction is the part with the strongest research support, while the glucosamine that dominates the marketing has repeatedly underperformed in controlled canine trials.

Quick answer: VetIQ Hip & Joint is a budget joint chew whose manufacturer page lists glucosamine, omegas and MSM without disclosing how much of each a serving contains. Research suggests omega-3 fatty acids are the best-supported nutraceutical for canine osteoarthritis; a 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis reported “a very marked non-effect” for chondroitin–glucosamine products (Barbeau-Grégoire et al., Int J Mol Sci 2022). Supplements of any brand are a supporting measure, not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, weight management or prescribed pain control.

What is actually in VetIQ Hip & Joint?

Less than you can easily check, and that is the first finding worth reporting. As of August 2026 the manufacturer’s page for VetIQ Hip & Joint names three active categories — glucosamine, omegas and MSM — with no milligram figures, no EPA/DHA split and no guaranteed analysis. Third-party listings reproducing a numeric panel could not be confirmed against the brand, so no amounts are quoted here. For the numbers, read the bottle in front of you or ask PetIQ, and treat any figure copied from a review site as unverified.

Serving size on this type of product scales with body weight, so a small dog and a large dog do not get the same totals from the same bottle. Without a per-serving panel you cannot compare this chew against the intakes used in the trials that produced results, or against a competitor on anything but price. In particular, the therapeutic-diet trials behind the omega-3 evidence used enriched diets, not treat-sized chews. Never scale a product up on your own to close a gap you cannot measure; follow the label or ask your veterinarian.

Does the science support hip and joint chews?

This is where most reviews of VetIQ go quiet. Ingredient lists get copied; evidence quality rarely does. Here is how these ingredient classes sit against the published canine literature.

The Barbeau-Grégoire meta-analysis is the single most important document for anyone shopping this category. Reviewing 57 articles and 72 trials, the authors found “an evident clinical analgesic efficacy for omega-3-enriched diets, omega-3 supplements and cannabidiol (to a lesser degree),” a weak effect for collagen, and concluded that chondroitin–glucosamine nutraceuticals “should no longer be recommended for pain management in canine and feline osteoarthritis.”

That is a strong statement, and it does not mean glucosamine is harmful. It means the burden of proof has shifted, and marketing that presents glucosamine as the proven active ingredient is running ahead of the data. There is a second, quieter problem: label accuracy. Asthana and colleagues (PLoS One, 2019) developed and validated an HPLC method for quantifying glucosamine in dietary supplements — analytical work that exists precisely because supplement content is not verified the way prescription drugs are. Human and veterinary supplements alike sit in a lightly regulated space, so a number on a panel is a claim, not a guarantee, and an absent number is not even that. Products carrying the NASC Quality Seal have at least submitted to third-party auditing, which is one of the few practical quality filters a shopper has. How long before you see anything?

Owner reviews on retail sites frequently describe improvement “within days.” Physiologically, that timing is hard to explain for glucosamine or omega-3, both of which act slowly if at all, and it overlaps heavily with normal day-to-day variation in a dog’s comfort and with owner expectation. A more realistic frame:

  • Weeks 1–2: Palatability and tolerance become clear. Loose stool or reduced appetite is the most common early complaint with oily chews. Nothing meaningful should be read into mobility at this stage.
  • Weeks 4–8: In the trials that did show benefit, omega-3 effects on clinical signs emerged over a period of weeks to months, not days. This is the earliest window in which a genuine change is plausible.
  • Beyond 8–12 weeks: If there is no observable difference in stair use, rising from rest, or willingness to walk, the honest conclusion is that this product is not doing much for this dog.

Track something objective: video your dog rising from a lie-down on the same surface weekly, or count stairs taken before a pause. Memory is a poor instrument for slow change.

Common mistakes owners make

Treating a limp as a supplement problem. Cruciate ligament rupture, immune-mediated joint disease, tick-borne infection and bone tumours all present as lameness. A chew does not distinguish them.

Doubling up on omega-3 sources. Adding a separate fish oil on top of a joint chew, an omega-enriched food and a skin supplement can stack up. Fish oil at high intakes has been associated with GI upset and altered platelet function; your veterinarian should be the one doing that arithmetic.

Assuming shellfish glucosamine is fine for a shellfish-sensitive dog. True shellfish allergy in dogs is uncommon but not impossible, and this product’s glucosamine is shellfish-derived.

Ignoring body condition. The single best-supported intervention for canine osteoarthritis in this literature is not on any supplement label. Marshall and colleagues found lameness decreased significantly after relatively modest weight reduction in obese dogs with OA, with objective gait analysis confirming it. Mlacnik and colleagues found caloric restriction combined with physiotherapy improved mobility over six months.

When to call your vet

Contact your veterinarian promptly if your dog shows any of the following, rather than reaching for a supplement:

  • Sudden lameness, or refusal to bear weight on a limb
  • Yelping, guarding, or a change in temperament around handling
  • Swollen, hot or visibly deformed joints
  • Lameness with fever, lethargy or loss of appetite
  • Rapid worsening over days rather than gradual change over months
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, black stools or appetite loss after starting any new supplement
  • Any joint sign in a dog already taking NSAIDs, corticosteroids or anticoagulant medication
