The Wuffes joint supplement is a pork-liver-flavored soft chew sold by Wuffes, a US direct-to-consumer pet brand, built around glucosamine HCl, MSM, chondroitin sulfate and green-lipped mussel, with smaller amounts of vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, pollock-oil omega-3 and yucca schidigera. Whether it is worth buying depends almost entirely on which size version you are looking at, because the large-breed and small-medium formulas are not the same product at different serving sizes — they carry very different amounts of every active ingredient. What exactly is Wuffes?
Wuffes is an online-first supplement brand whose flagship product is the Advanced Hip & Joint Chew, sold direct from its own store and through the usual third-party pet marketplaces. The chews are sold by dog weight band — separate toy-breed, small/medium and large-breed pages — and the brand’s own product pages publish full active-ingredient panels — which is more transparency than a good chunk of the category offers, and it makes an honest comparison possible.
Two details from the live product pages matter more than anything in the marketing copy. First, the label differences between size versions are large. Second, the directions are weight-banded rather than one-size-fits-all: the large-breed page instructs different daily chew counts across its weight bands, and the small/medium page does the same. That means the amount your dog actually receives depends on your dog’s weight, not just on which tub you bought — always follow the label on the tub you own, or your vet’s direction.

Does the research support these ingredients?
This is where a supplement review earns its keep, and where most of them stop at “clinically studied ingredients.” The honest picture is that the ingredients in this chew do not all sit on the same evidence footing — not close.
The most rigorous synthesis available is a 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis by Barbeau-Grégoire and colleagues, which screened nearly 1,600 publications and included 72 trials across nine categories of natural health compound in dogs and cats with osteoarthritis. Its conclusion was blunt: clear analgesic efficacy for omega-3-enriched diets and omega-3 supplements, weak efficacy for collagen, and what the authors described as “a very marked non-effect” of chondroitin–glucosamine nutraceuticals, leading them to recommend those no longer be recommended for pain management in canine and feline osteoarthritis (PMID 36142319).
A separate, independently conducted clinical trial points the same way. Kampa and colleagues randomised 75 pet dogs with hip osteoarthritis across five arms — a green-lipped-mussel lipid extract, a green-lipped-mussel-plus-krill compound, glucosamine plus chondroitin sulfate, carprofen, and placebo — and measured peak vertical force on a force plate, which is objective rather than owner-reported. Both marine compounds and the NSAID separated significantly from placebo by week four and week six. The glucosamine-and-chondroitin arm did not (PMID 36816197). A follow-up study by the same group in 101 dogs again found the green-lipped-mussel-plus-krill compound and meloxicam both beat placebo on force-plate measurements, while a different marketed supplement did not (PMID 39450405).

The awkward implication for this product — and for almost every joint chew on the shelf — is that its largest ingredient by weight sits in the weakest evidence tier, while the ingredient class with the strongest evidence is present at 16 mg in the large-breed formula. That said, “the evidence for glucosamine is weak” is not the same as “it does nothing for any dog.” Individual response varies, and glucosamine has a long safety record. It just should not be the reason you skip a veterinary work-up.
How does Wuffes compare with other joint chews?
The large-breed glucosamine amount is broadly comparable to what other mainstream chews list. Where products genuinely differ is in ingredient form and in whether extracts are standardised. Green-lipped mussel is a good example: the trials above used specific lipid extracts, not generic mussel powder, and a label that says only “green lipped mussels 100 mg” does not tell you which you are getting. How do you read a joint supplement label properly?
- Check per-chew amounts, not per-tub totals. Marketing figures are sometimes stated per daily serving, sometimes per chew. Reconcile them against the directions.
- Look for the salt form. Glucosamine HCl and glucosamine sulfate are not interchangeable by weight.
- Ask whether extracts are standardised. “Green-lipped mussel” tells you the species, not the extract.
- Find the EPA/DHA number, not just “omega-3.” Omega-3 from an oil is a mixed number; EPA and DHA are the studied fractions.
- Look for third-party testing and an NASC quality seal. Neither guarantees efficacy, but both raise the floor on what is actually in the tub.
- Check the flavouring base for allergens. Pork liver, brewers yeast and whey are common triggers in dogs already on an elimination diet.

What should you realistically expect, and when?
Owner expectations are where most supplement disappointment starts. Useful framing from the trial data: in the Kampa hip-osteoarthritis study, the NSAID arm reached statistical significance on force-plate measures at week two, while the marine-compound arms reached it at week four and held it at week six. Nothing in that dataset improved overnight, and the study ran six weeks — so a two-week judgement call is premature by the standards of the research itself.

A practical tip that costs nothing: before you start, film thirty seconds of your dog rising from lying down, taking the first few steps, and negotiating a familiar step. Repeat monthly. What mistakes do owners make with joint supplements?
Treating a supplement as a diagnosis. Stiffness and reluctance to jump are symptoms, not a condition. They can reflect osteoarthritis, but also cruciate ligament disease, hip or elbow dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease, tick-borne infection, immune-mediated polyarthritis or bone tumours — none of which a chew addresses.

- Sudden lameness, non-weight-bearing on a limb, or a limp that appears overnight
- Yelping, snapping when touched, or other signs of acute pain
- Visible joint swelling, heat, or a joint that looks asymmetrical
- Rapid deterioration in mobility over days rather than months
- Lameness accompanied by fever, lethargy, appetite loss or weight loss
- Any mobility change in a dog under two years old
- A dog on an existing prescription medication, or with kidney, liver, or bleeding-disorder history
- A dog with a diagnosed shellfish or pork sensitivity
